Sometimes the stone breaks in a way we didn’t plan. That’s part of the creative process. A pivot or a trip back to the drawing board usually means something else wants to form, so after a brief pitty party, we then trust the process and often end up better for it. That’s the beauty of being an artist: the medium shapes the outcome, including what the piece wants to be and who it’s for. Sometimes we don’t understand it till we deliver to the customer and see their response. Those moments we struggle with make sense in the end.

The task was to bring our best, to sit at the feet of the kinetic art of Lyman Whitaker and the Infinity Fountains of Ryan Steffens. Heading back to our workshop in Colorado, we had ideas. 

Inspired by New Mexico mountains, we uncovered this hidden gem of New Mexico flagstone.  Covered in dirt, scratches and some stone even had been spray painted on (gasp!!) , but we had a hunch if we just kept looking, we would find something there.  Moving heavy stone, piece by piece, “What about that one??”

Some trips are just a drive. This one was an adventure.

We packed up the truck, the kid, and the camping gear…hitched the trailer, and headed south carrying a Colorado Buff Flag Stone, Deep Set. Born from the Northern Colorado Mountains and built with the inspiration and creative spirit of the borderlands of West Texas, Marfa and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

A completely unique piece of handcrafted outdoor furniture came to life. Not assembled. Crafted.

Once back in the workshop, we laid out the stone, and it was instantly clear. A single stone back, smooth curved lines, and soft, pillowy edges began to emerge. As we chiseled, the stone worked like butter—surprisingly graceful for such a rugged material. What unfolded was a piece that felt both timeless and elegant. It felt less like we were shaping it, and more like we were simply revealing what was meant to be.

Unlike plastic or fabric-covered furniture that needs to be replaced every few years, stone furniture is built to last. It stands up to Colorado’s intense sun, snow, wind, and rain. No fading. No rust. Just solid, natural beauty that gets better with time.
