Galactic Red Stone Bench: Unearthed Beauty from Northern Colorado
We headed up to the Northern Colorado quarries on a mission—to find the perfect reds. Berthoud, CO is home to a remarkable multicolor quarry, where reds, purples, golds, and greys all flow from the same mountain.
Down in a forgotten pile of scraps, we uncovered something extraordinary: a slab we instantly named Galactic Red. This bench practically asked to be made. Purple and gold edges framed a cosmic field of deep red, and to top it off—my favorite detail—dendrites: fossilized plant imprints delicately layered along the sides.
The trickiest part? Finding armrests to match such a standout stone. But with a little luck (and a lot of digging), we found the perfect complement to complete this stellar piece.
The Story Behind The Stone: Grey Contrasting Colors in Red Mountains of Southern Utah
Back in June, a returning customer reached out, ready to expand his Stone 2 Furniture collection. This time, he envisioned a relaxed hangout space on the patio to complement his existing Idaho Grey Bar Set—something that would contrast beautifully with the rich red mountains of Southern Utah.
We landed on the Deep Set: a table and chairs crafted from the stunning Elite Hombre Grey. This stone was a showstopper—deep grey with natural bands of warm gold gracing its edges. As we left the quarry, we already knew the perfect design: our signature infinity curves.
Once back in the workshop, we laid out the stone, and it was instantly clear. A single stone back, smooth curved lines, and soft, pillowy edges began to emerge. As we chiseled, the stone worked like butter—surprisingly graceful for such a rugged material. What unfolded was a piece that felt both timeless and elegant. It felt less like we were shaping it, and more like we were simply revealing what was meant to be.
Benches by the Pond – A Colorado Red Story
We got a call from Edwards, Colorado—a peaceful little property tucked in the beauty of Vail Valley. The request? To create inviting resting places around a serene pond. The customer wanted the timeless warmth of Colorado Red stone to pop against the lush greens surrounding the water.
Our design? Three Wavy Straight Benches—a twist on our usual backless, organically curved seats. This time, we went with clean, classic lines for a more structured look, while still celebrating the natural beauty of stone.
Our search began in Lyons, Colorado, rock hounding for the perfect red. Late summer makes it harder to find prime pieces, and while we scored a few from Lyons, our hunt didn’t stop there. We wound our way through the Colorado mountains, gathering raw slabs from a variety of quarries—many of them caked in dirt and mystery. It wasn’t until we returned to the workshop and gave each stone a thorough scrub that their true beauty was revealed.
Each piece told a different story, so of course they got names:
Ophilia: Weathered and wise, aged moss rock, crowned with a centered dendrite in the 2nd stone. We shaped her weathered tones as a classic rectangular bench, simple and strong.
Ruby: Our wild child. Her stones shimmered with orange and purple hues running through its red face. Dendrites danced along her edges, and we knew she was destined to be the centerpiece.
Jessica: The third and final bench, named for her quiet grace. Featuring two tones of Colorado Red, we shaped her with a subtle curve to hug the pond’s edge perfectly.
In the end, the collection came together beautifully—each bench with its own personality, yet perfectly in sync. We were thrilled to deliver and install these special pieces for one of our favorite return customers.
