The Santa Fe Trail and All The Places Stone Furniture Takes Us

In April 2026 we became visiting artists at Canyon Road’s, The Wiford Gallery.   The task was to bring our best, to sit at the feet of the kinetic art Wind Sculptures of Lyman Whitaker and the Infinity Fountains of Ryan Steffens, among other stellar artists! The thought of being in Santa Fe and getting to explore this historic town, we were stoked!! Headed back to our workshop in Colorado, we talked ideas.

Inspired by New Mexico mountains, we uncovered this hidden gem of New Mexico flagstone.  It was such a variety of color, coming out of the same area. It ranged from chocolate brown, light browns, golds and light tan colors…some pieces, all at the same time. We are out in the field and this stone is covered in dirt, scratches and some stone even had been spray painted on (gasp!!) , but we had a hunch something was there.

Moving heavy stone, piece by piece, “What about that one??” Yes, there it was! And then back to keep looking for more, again and again, until we had enough stone to make 2 chairs and a table. The beauty of the stone is so cool, but the dimensions of the stone we select has to be exact, and consistent or we loose them when we are building. They are designed to float perfectly on our frames and must function impeccably, support comfort, while looking great.

SO…after that process, we brought our finds back to our workshop and got down to it.  Clean up, scrub down and lay them out, the curvy lines now became more prominent. The patterns in the stone that if we looked at them long enough, we could start to see the basic shapes, lines and dimensions of the stone that fit together perfectly.

Stand back, tilt the back, adjust the seat 20* and forward a 1/4”… hold it there, chisel a bit more …(Do you know how many times we are handling this stone??). Armed with a hammer and chisel we began to shape and sculpt these gorgeous stone chairs to highlight the song that nature was singing.

Ruby, Ruby

Ruby, Ruby came from stone we hunted down in the northern Colorado mountains. In a mountain of golden buffs, we spotted soft peachy-pink tones, streaks of ruby red and patterns of light grey that drew us in. Sculpted lines that looks like existed for millennia, we tried to highlight her story. Comfort and grandeur, together.

Touch of Grey

Northern Colorado stone hitting home runs this season! We found this grey flagstone with whimsical dendrite patterns people always love. The fern-like markings where wind, water, and iron met over time. No two pieces ever come out the same.

Sunshine Daydream

Sunshine Daydream is the standout of the batch. Arizona Buff in warm, sun-drenched honey golden yellow color. Faint wind-marked lines across a matte surface that somehow shimmers in the light. The stone feels like pressed sand, a soft stone that looks other worldly. We dropped it off this week at it’s new home on a horse property in Idaho, and it is absolutely stunning.

We're also grateful for our continued partnership with The Wiford Gallery in Santa Fe — always a treat seeing these pieces find their audience there.

Thanks for being part of this creative process with us. More to come soon.

Warmly,

Jennifer and Garry Carmack, Stone 2 Furniture
